2021 SA Youth Olympian Ethan Du Preez 200m ButterflyETHAN DU PREEZ, 17yrs old from Cape Town and goes to Milnerton High School. He has been swimming since the age of two, and started club swimming from the tender age of five, showing early signs of water proficiency. Ethan's inspiration is the legendary Michael Phelps and Chad Le Clos, and his favourite event is the 200m Butterfly. Ethan has spent much of this year living with Chad Le Clos in Durban, in preparation for Tokyo 2021. He has produced one of the fastest world junior (15-16 year old) times, in the 2020 South African Grand Prix. By comparison, his 200m Butterfly final time of 1:56:50 would be the fourth fastest in American juniors history, behind only Phelps, Luca Urlando and Andrew Seliskar. His mother, Melanie, is his rock, and has made many sacrifices to ensure that he is at peak performance level, and gets the necessary nutrition required for an elite swimmer. Typically, Olympic swimmers need 8000-10000 calories a day! Ethan trains at least five hours a day, and has taken a gap year to give himself the best possible chance of success in the Olympics. Ethan loves travelling. Budapest was a particular highlight, which is not only a mecca for swimming, but his Cybersmart Aquatics coach Balin Richter is native to Hungary. Back a buddy :Ethan has a back a buddy page, to meet the demands of being an upcoming athlete in a time of a pandemic. One of my very best memories as a Vossie was beating Winterburg for the first time in quite a while. They were always our big rival, so to beat them on our home ground, in front of the whole school, was just incredible. ... See MoreSee Less
